“The Woman in Cabin 10” by Ruth Ware

Okay, get ready for a PAGE TURNER!  Seriously.  I was so sucked into this book that my kids foraged through the kitchen for scraps for lunch while we were at the beach.  I kid, I kid.  I made them lunch (but let’s be honest, they are fully capable of making it themselves!). But I’m not kidding about the page turner part.

I originally picked up “The Woman in Cabin 10” because I forgot to bring my own book to the beach.  I left it laying right on the kitchen counter when we loaded up the car.  But fortunately, the house we were renting had several books to borrow and this one seemed like a decent option.  I wasn’t looking for anything special.  Just something to read quietly on the porch with my coffee or on the beach under the umbrella.  But this book far exceeded my expectations!

The main character, Lo (short for Laura) initially struck me as an unassuming woman; grappling with one of the older questions that plague women…should she pursue her career or settle down?  But she is a travel writer with a unique opportunity…hop aboard a luxury yacht for its maiden voyage.  So she leaves her seemingly feet and thoughtful boyfriend at home, shakes off some lingering doubts, and decides to make the most of this trip in the name of advancing her career.

But nothing good comes of boarding that ship!

She suddenly finds herself trapped on a floating vessel in the middle of the North Atlantic…with internet service eerily interrupted and a mysterious passenger suddenly missing.  All I kept conjuring up in my mind while reading this was the image of the search and rescue crews as they tried to find and recover the Titan sub remains; cold, dark, and trapped in the middle of nowhere!  Lo has to navigate self doubt and the real possibility that other passengers think she’s gone crazy.  But she’s determined to figure out the truth about the missing woman in cabin 10.  Even if it means putting her own life at risk!

I was 150% sucked into this book from the first chapter.  I read it in 2.5 days (see the note above about leaving my kids to fend for themselves) because I could NOT put it down!

On the ride home from the beach I told my husband I thought they should make it into a movie…and guess what? It is slated to be adapted for the big screen by Hillary Seitz (“Insomnia” fame)!  I highly encourage you to read this thriller before the movie comes out!  I was not disappointed in the least!  In all honesty, I was kind of sad to leave it behind on the beach house book shelf, but I just know someone else will be grateful to find it there!
